Mosquito Lake Keeps Anglers Off Balance in OWF’s First Tournament

The Ohio Walleye Federation held its first tournament of the 2016 season on Sunday April 17 at Mosquito Lake.  Thirty five teams took to the water to compete for $5,400 in prize money.

After a mild winter, and having snow and cold the weekend before, high pressure and warm weather set the stage for Sunday’s event.  Water temperatures  were in the mid to upper 50 degree mark, and the walleyes were on verge of finishing their post spawn resting period to beginning their pre-summer feeding patterns.  Some fish were caught in deep water in the early part of week, but as outside temperatures warmed to 60 to 70 degrees, walleye began their migration into the warming shallow water the day prior to the tournament.  This transition kept anglers off balance while they pre-fished.

The team of Chad and Cody Troyer from Orwell, Ohio took top honors with a 1st place finish with 5 fish at 10.56 lbs.  Second place was earned by Paul Kerr and Brian Davies with 10.47 lbs.  Third place went to Clayton Allhouse and Chris Romano with a creel of 10.39 lbs.  The teams of Christopher Durkin and Anthony Naples 10.12 lbs and Robert Burkholder and Marion Erb 9.57lbs rounded out the top five.  Big fish weighed in at 4.10lbs and belonged to Robert Burkholder and Marion Erb, who caught the fish jigging in 20 feet of water on the south end of Mosquito.

The top five teams reported catching their fish jigging in 2 to 5 feet of water, targeting weeds and warmer water temperatures.  1/8 oz. Samantha’s Jigs and Northland’s Fireball jigs tipped with minnows, crawlers and leeches dominated the bite.    The team of Allhouse and Romano also reported using blade baits in deeper water to land a portion of their creel.

The Ohio Walleye Federation will hold its next event on Berlin Lake May 1st.    The OWF events are made possible because of our sponsor support from Ravenna Marine, Vic’s Marine, Haine’s Marine, Worldwide Marine Insurance, Canyon Cooler, and Goschinski’s Fin Feather and Fur along with many others.  For more information please visit www.fishowf.club or e mail fishowf@gmail.com.
