Walleye Madness in Geneva

Hot temps and calm water conditions didn’t hurt the bite on Lake Erie as the full 40 team field battled in the Walleye Madness  Tournaments  Geneva  event held on June 28th.  Finding the right school of walleye proved to be critical as the top 4 teams were separated by less than 1.5 pounds.

First place was captured by the team of Chris and Isaiah Shipman. The Shipman’s brought a five fish limit of 38.30# in their victory.  Second place was awarded to Sam Cappelli and Ted Jackson with a 37.70# bag. Sam and Ted also brought home Mercury Marine and WT6 contingency bonuses.

Third place went to Don Lint and Don Johnson with  a 37.25# bag. Jason Kopf and Rodger Riggs 37.00# captured  fourth  place.  Jason  and Rodger were also awarded the Buckeye Sports Center Big fish Bonus with a 9.70# walleye. Rounding out the top 5 was the team of Jerome Dorlack and Randy Eyre with 36.80#. Father and son team of David and Travis Hartman were awarded the Lund Boats contingency bonus for finishing as the top Lund boat.

The prevailing pattern of the day was targeting suspended fish in 55-72 feet of water. Presentations included trolling worm harnesses with variety of weights to achieve proper depth. Changing blade color and lure depth were critical factors in producing catches throughout the day.

Walleye Madness Tournaments are sponsored by Buckeye Sports Center, Lund Boats and Mercury

Marine. The series offers no-membership fee required 100% payout tournaments, plus $700 per event

in sponsor bonuses.  Cabela’s National Team Championship qualifying is provided by the series affiliation with the national organization The Walleye Federation.  Next up on the Walleye Madness Tournaments schedule is the WMT/WT6 Berlin Lake Trifecta on September 13th and 14th

Ohio Walleye Federation on Berlin Lake

The Ohio Walleye Federation held its 2014 Ravenna Marine Inland Lake 2-Day Champhionship on Berlin Lake June 21 & 22.  After several days of thunderstorms and severe weather Berlin Lake had risen 4ft in just two days before the tournament.  Teams persevered through the tough pre-fishing understanding fluctuating water levels had made a normally tough bite tougher and knowing landing every bite would be critical to claiming the guaranteed $2500 1st place prize.  The team of Collin Murphy and Jay Dossi persevered over 25 other teams bringing in a 5 fish limit each day for a 2 day total of 25.48lbs capturing the $2500 1st place prize.  Murphy/Dossi reported a tough day of pre-fishing the day before the tournament eventually catching one 4lber in shallow water.  Knowing that was the size fish that was needed to win the tournament the team decided they were going to focus on shallow water all day and try to grind out 5 bites.  The plan came together and after day 1 they were in the lead with a 5 fish bag of over 14.5lbs.  Day 2 the team was able to scratch out another 5 fish limit securing the first place prize.  Murphy/Dossi reported catching their fish on jig and worms in 3-5ft of water.  Second place went to the team of Robert Burkholder and Marion Erb with a 2 day total of 22.84lbs.   They also caught their fish using jig and worms in 15-22ft of water.  The top two teams were the only teams to bring in a 5 fish limit each day showing once again the consistency is critical to winning a two day tournament.  Other top finishing teams included Mulraney/Sharrone in 3rd, Drotar/Bowen in 4th, Dossi/Barwick in 5th and Shipman/Shipman in 6th.    Reports from the remaining placing teams were a mix of jigging with worms and trolling crankbaits on leadcore.
