We want to say “Thank You!” to Dennis Heying and Tammi Heying and family of Minden, Ne., for all their help and support for and during the tournament. They helped to make this year’s tournament a huge success!

A special thanks goes out to the Nebraska Walleye Trail for their co-sponsoring and supporting the tournament; to the Nebraska Walleye Association and all the Anglers that fished the tournament and to all the area businesses for their donations and support of the tournament; to Todd Garringer for being the tournament’s weighmaster; to Rod Marshall family and Todd Garringer and son for doing boat checks both days, Rod Bartell for letting seeing the boats off and back in and Troy Hornaman for measuring fish.

Harlan Anglers Walleye Club Tournament held on Harlan County Lake

By Rod Hoard

Sunday June 4, 2017, the Harlan Anglers Walleye annual Fishing Tournament, hosted by the Harlan Anglers Walleye Club, was held on Harlan County Lake. The weather was sunny, hot with very little wind.  A total of 99 fish were caught Sunday for a total weight of 204 pounds of fish. Sixty one teams from Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado participated in this year’s tournament. This was a tough tournament as the lake level has been rising and is higher than it has been for years. This puts the fish back in the weeds and trees where unfortunately they are hard to find because of the density of the weeds and trees which makes it almost impossible for the boats to get through.

A special thanks goes out to all the Anglers that fished the tournament and to all the area businesses for their donations and support of the tournament; to Todd Garringer for being the tournament’s weigh-master; to Rod Marshall Family and Todd Garringer and son for doing boat checks and Troy Hornaman for measuring fish.

The “Big Fish,” caught by Steve and Jim Fitz from Broken Bow Nebraska and Wyoming weighed 6.42 pounds and paid $610. This tournament had 100% payouts that were paid to a total of 12 winning teams. Listed are the top five teams:

First Place at a cash prize of $3,500 went to Dennis & Shelby Vance from Selden Kansas. Total weight of fish caught was 17.02 pounds.

Second Place at a cash prize of $2,150 went to Jared & Roger Meyer of Hastings & Ayr Nebraska Total weight of fish caught was 11.14 pounds.

Third Place at a cash prize of $1,350 went to Bruce Webster & Justin Monsel of Lincoln Nebraska. Total weight of fish caught was 10.84 pounds.

Fourth Place at a cash prize of $650 went to Casey Skiles & Shawn Stone from Alma and Loomis Nebraska. Total weight of fish caught was 9.64 pounds.

Fifth Place at a cash prize of $450 went to Jim & Steve Fitz from Broken Bow Nebraska & Wyoming. Total weight of fish caught was 9.14 pounds.

Do you like to fish? Do you like spending time at Harlan County Lake? If your answer is yes to both questions come check out the Harlan Anglers Walleye Club.

The Harlan Anglers Walleye Club—HAWC–is a local club that was started over twenty years ago by local fishermen. Today HAWC has close to 100 members that include families. Members come from throughout Nebraska and from neighboring states like Kansas, Colorado and Iowa. HAWC tournaments continue to grow with many of the same people fishing these tournaments year after year. HAWC and its tournaments has been a great opportunity for members and nonmembers to get to know others and to build lasting friendships.

HAWC has several sponsors from the area and the surrounding communities. Sponsors are what make these events successful and also help HAWC support Youth Fishing. In 2017 HAWC will hold a free raffle at each tournament for a free Lifetime Youth Fishing permit for those fifteen years and younger. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offer these with Cabela’s paying half of the permit and HAWC paying for the other half. These Sponsorships is what helps the club have a one hundred percent payout, pay for the Lifetime Youth Permits and operating costs.

HAWC has teamed up with the Nebraska Walleye Trail and the Nebraska Walleye Association in the past and hopes to continue in the future. Each of these organizations promote Youth Fishing by not only giving out Youth Lifetime Fishing permits but also by hosting youth fishing clinics, giving fishing lessons, and handing out free rods and reels to each youth. Many members of HAWC are also members of the Nebraska Walleye Association and the Nebraska Walleye trail with each fishing the other’s tournaments to make them successful.  For a list of events held by the Harlan Anglers Walleye Club, Sponsors and Tournament results go to our website: www.harlananglerswalleyeclub.com.

The Harlan Anglers Walleye Club starts its Tuesday night league on April 25, 2017 on Harlan County Lake. To fish the Tuesday Night League you must be a member of the Harlan Anglers Walleye Club with the cost of a family membership just $20 per year. Membership also goes toward an end of the year picnic with the club providing steaks for everyone and members bringing pot luck dishes. All members and their families are invited to attend the end of the year picnic. The club also hosts Sunday’s leagues from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. throughout the summer with the weigh-in held at North Shore Marina’s boat slips. To fish these Tuesday night or Sunday tournaments the cost is $5.00 per person over the age of 18. You can have as many people in your boat as you want as along as all are members. You can check in one man’s limit per boat with the heaviest total weight winning the pot for the night. Of the $5 each person fishing, half goes to payout for that night and the other half is put back to go toward the end of the year picnic.

In 2016 the club purchased a trailer for these events and the club members spent the winter readying it for the upcoming year’s tournaments.

In 2017 HAWC is hosting four walleye Tournaments. The first, the Rod Marshall Memorial Tournament, is May 6 and May 7 on Harlan County Lake from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days, is sponsored by the Nebraska Walleye Trail and HAWC. All entry fees are paid out 100% to the tournament participants with the weigh-in located on North Shore Marina Property.

The second 2017 tournament is HAWC’s Walleye tournament on June 4 on Harlan County Lake from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All entry fees are paid out 100% to the tournament participants with the weigh-in located on North Shore Marina Property.

The third 2017 tournament is the Harlan Anglers Big Eye Spinner Baits Walleye Tournament at Johnsons Lake on July 30 from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with weigh-in at Lakeshore Marina.

Anyone that is interested in becoming a member of the Harlan Anglers Walleye Club or fishing the tournaments can get more information on the HAWC website at: www.harlananglerswalleyeclub.com.
